Career Studio Coordinator (Co-op Student Position)

Start: Monday, September 5, 2022

End Date: Friday, December 16, 2022 (15 weeks)

Hours: 35 hrs/wk  (in-person)

Monday to Friday: 9:00 am to 5:00pm (this includes 60-minute unpaid lunch from noon to 1pm)

Rate of Pay: $15.25/hr + Vacation Pay

*Possibility of extending the work term into the winter 2023 term.

**The week of August 22 and the week of August 29th: The successful candidate will be completing a total of 14 hours of paid online training.

The Career Studio is a joint initiative between the Student Career Services and the Co-operative Education program at STFX. The Career Studio is an open-concept environment where StFX students can drop in for general career-related services without an appointment. The Career Studio will be open Monday to Friday; it will be located down the hall from Student Career Services, Schwartz 183 and will be staffed by trained StFX students as Career Peer Educators.  The Career Studio Coordinator will assist with building and maintaining this initiative.

 

The Career Studio Coordinator will work in collaboration with the Co-op and Student Career Services team to manage the new Career Studio and will report to a designated team lead. This will include supporting a student staff of one, facilitating workshops, program development, service delivery, and service evaluation.  The Career Studio Coordinator will also collaborate with our employer and graduate/professional school partners to host a series of events for students.

 

Duties

  • Manage a staff of one student. This will include scheduling and training.
  • Create and execute a marketing strategy to promote this new initiative with the goal of increasing student usage of the Career Studio.
  • Work one-one with students who visit the Career Studio seeking career/employment related assistance.
  • Assist with updating the Career Studio student-training manual to assist with future training needs.
  • Schedule and promote the Career Studio open house event in late September/early October.
  • Create and facilitate workshops (in-person/virtual) for students on various career-related topics (such as job search skills, networking, cover letter & resume writing, and interview skills).Target: 1 workshop per week.
  • Work in collaboration with the Co-op Education and Student Career Centre team to develop new and exciting Career Studio programming for students (i.e. career chats, career café, webinars, lunch & learns, social media).Target: 1-2 events per week
  • Coordinate with employer partners who decide to host virtual or in-person events for the fall semester. Actively promote the employer events to students.
  • Participate in special events hosted by both offices, and share employment opportunities and resources.
  • Update online career resources and promote online services (i.e. Careercruising, Interview Stream).
  • Upload learning modules to the new Student Career Services Moodle platform and update job board on a daily basis.
  • Prepare and submit a monthly statistical report in order to track the delivery of service.
  • Promote the new XConnects Mentorship program to students. Work in collaboration with the StFX Alumni Office to support and promote the STFX peer mentorship program (EnPoint) platform. Target: 20-40 students signing up in the fall semester.
  • Assist with representing the Co-op Education program and Career Services at various events.

 

Learning Outcomes:

  • The student would receive training in career planning, resume and cover letter development, interview, and job search strategies; work-integrated learning theory, networking, and student development theories.

 

  • Through this experience the student will develop his/her/their abilities to work in a professional office environment/client service, gain knowledge of how Canadian workplaces function, and build employability skills.

 

  • The student will enhance his/her interpersonal skills, verbal and written communication, networking/building relationships, time management, analysis, and research skills, planning, organization, decision making, leadership, initiative, taking responsibility, and problem-solving abilities.

 

  • The skill development and career planning strategies are all things that the student can apply to his/her own career development in the future.

 

Qualifications

  • Must be enrolled in a Co-op Education Program within a post-secondary institution within the Province of Nova Scotia. StFX Co-op students will be given priority.
  • Computer skills (word processing, database, Internet). Familiar with Moodle.
  • Organizational and multi-tasking skills as this role will have multiple initiatives happening within the same timeline and managing a small staff.
  • Marketing background considered an asset.
  • Outgoing, enthusiastic and creative team player who enjoys working independently and as part of a team.
  • Have solid verbal communication skills to interact with students within a one-one meeting and facilitating workshops.
  • Have solid written communication skills, enjoys grammar, and sentence structure.
  • Responsible can demonstrate tact and diplomacy.
  • Demonstrate initiative, willingness to learn, and take innovative approaches to problem-solving.
  • Adhere to a confidentiality agreement regarding employer contacts, and student information.
