FFTAHS works closely with the 10 Fort Frances region First Nation communities, partners and funders to improve the health and wellness of the communities it serves.

Position Summary

The Environmental Public Health Officer works with communities to provide advice, guidance, education, public health assessments and recommendations to First Nations and their leadership to help them prevent and manage public health risks associated with the environment.

Job Duties

  • Timely response to the environmental public health needs of First Nations communities, recognizing environmental public health is part of a wholistic approach to wellness
  • Delivers core programs of Safe Drinking Water, Food Safety, Healthy Housing, Solid Waste and Wastewater Management, Facility Inspections, Communicable Disease Control, Emergency Preparedness and Response
  • Advocacy and expertise in environmental public health
  • Support the development of First Nations community capacity in environmental public health and collaboration with First Nations communities and Leadership to formulate Environmental Public Health Services priorities
  • Collaboration with the Community Health Nursing Team to support the development, review and implementation of joint priorities and focus areas
  • Use of culturally appropriate education and promotion techniques
  • Respect for First Nations cultures and acknowledging their sacred relationship with the environment
  • Attends all relevant meetings with communities and partners. Participates in health fairs, career fairs and other events as identified relevant
  • Builds cooperative working relationships with community members, partnering organizations, and other health service providers
  • Documents in accordance with FFTAHS Documentation Standard
  • Maintains and promotes safety by being a proactive safety leader and by following safe work practices and policies as prescribed
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree from recognized Canadian Institution
  • Successful completion of a course of full-time instruction in Public Health Inspection or Environmental Public Health at a Canadian post-secondary institution as recognized by the Board of Certification of the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors
  • Must possess a Certificate in Public Health Inspection (Canada), CPHI(C)
  • Must possess valid driver’s license, have a clean driver’s abstract, and be insurable
  • Current updated immunization required
  • Must possess or be willing to obtain current First Aid and CPR qualifications
  • Employment is conditional upon successful completion of a Vulnerable Sector
  • Criminal Records Check
