CO-OP: WELCOME CENTRE STUDENT ADVISING ASSISTANT, CAPE BRETON UNIVERSITY

Operating out of the new Student Welcome Centre, the Student Advising Assistant will greet visitors and campus members, answer questions about university services and provide support to full-time academic advisors. Academic advising is mandatory for new CBU students and offers them the opportunity to meet one-on-one with an advisor to discuss their program and what courses they should take in their first year. Accurate information on CBU’s programs, policies, procedures, and resources is also provided through academic advising appointments and student advising assistants will be vital to empowering new students with access to this knowledge.

Specific Responsibilities:

This full-time (35 hours/week) position is available for students accepted in a CBU CO-OP program.

Term: May 11th – August 28th, 2020 (subject to change)

  • Help students schedule advising appointments
  • Greet incoming students and parents and keep the Welcome Centre operating smoothly
  • Teach students to navigate the CBU website, access their CBU email, access their student account, create a class schedule and complete their registration
  • Maintain ongoing communication with academic advisors, and communicate as needed with faculty and School secretaries
  • Answer phone and email inquiries
  • Complete various organizational tasks
  • Assist with Orientation events planning
  • Work independently and as part of the First-Year Advising Centre team

  • have completed at least 30 credits (1 year) of an undergraduate program at CBU;
  • be returning to CBU in September 2020;
  • have a 70% average or higher;
  • have strong organization and communication skills; and
  • have a keen interest in helping new students get the best possible start to their time at CBU.
