STEAM KIT Program Developer
The Cape Breton Regional Library invites INTERNAL & EXTERNAL applications for the full-time, 1 year position of
STEAM Kits Program Developer.
About CBRL
Cape Breton Regional Library system serves Cape Breton Regional Municipality and Victoria County, with 12
branches and a bookmobile. CBRL is constantly evolving to meet the diverse recreational and educational needs
of our community. We have expanded our collections to include the loaning of snowshoes, tennis rackets,
board games, vegetable seeds, and other items. Now, the library is preparing to launch a loanable STEAM KIT
collection. This collection is designed to encourage children and adults alike to play and create while also
learning principles of coding, logic, mechanics, design, and creativity. Included in this collection are:
– Robotics kits
– Building toys & early elementary coding kits
– Electronic kits (Snap Circuits, Makey Makey and Little Bits)
– Knitting & weaving kits
– Button makers
Essential Duties
The STEAM KIT Program Developer will be responsible for getting the STEAM KIT collection ready for loaning to
the public and community groups, as well as training library staff on the use of kits and other makerspace tools
(e.g. 3-D Printers and Cricut Makers). This will include the following tasks:
– Developing both written and audio-visual training material to accompany STEAM KITS
– Developing evaluation tools to measure project success
– Training library staff on how to use STEAM KITS
– Demonstrating the STEAM KITS to community youth groups/after school programs
– Collaborating with other staff to develop related library programs and promotions.
Hours/Working Conditions
This position is full-time (35 hrs/week) based out of library headquarters in Sydney. The usual workweek will be
Monday to Friday. Occasional evening and weekend hours may be required. Flexibility is important as the
schedule may vary from week to week depending on need or events. There will be occasional travel (using
library vehicles) throughout CBRM and Victoria County for program delivery. Wage: $16.00/hr.
Requirements/Skills
– High School Diploma, with post-secondary degree/diploma in science, technology or education
considered an asset.
– Valid Nova Scotia Drivers License
– Curiosity mindset. Playfulness and willingness to learn new technologies
– Excellent written and oral communication skills
– Relevant experience leading and instructing groups
– Ability to meet deadlines and organize time efficiently
– Ability to collaborate and work well with others
– This position requires a clear criminal record check and a child abuse registry check
