The Elizabeth Boardmore One-Act Play Festival is set to return to Cape Breton University, running from March 12 to 15 at 7:00pm at the Boardmore Playhouse. The annual festival offers new and experienced writers, directors and actors a chance to showcase their talents.
This year, the festival will feature ten plays over four nights, with fifty per cent of the schedule highlighting original plays written by CBU students and local playwrights.
“The Elizabeth Boardmore One Act Play Festival is very proud of its mandate to produce new work by local playwrights, having staged nearly 300 original plays since the festival started in 1972,” says Todd Hiscock, Artistic Director of the Boardmore Theatre.
New Additions and Returning Talent
New to the festival this year will be Stand Up Comedy. Each evening of plays will open with a performance by a local stand-up comic.
“As the one act play festival is a training ground for new actors and directors, it will now also become a springboard for local aspiring stand-up comics,” says Hiscock. “This is sure to be an exciting addition to the festival.”
Additionally, the festival welcomes back a CBU alum to serve as the Festival Adjudicator. Richie Wilcox, who studied at CBU in the mid 90’s, returns after compiling an impressive resume in professional theatre. Over the past 30 years, Wilcox has worked steadily as a playwright, actor, director and artistic director with many major theatre companies across Canada.
