Preliminary Earthwork to Begin at Former Tartan Downs Property

The Urban Neighborhood Development Association (UNDA), in partnership with Cape Breton University, is pleased to confirm that preliminary earthwork will begin at the former Tartan Downs raceway property on January 5, 2026.

This initial work marks an important early milestone in preparing the property for the future construction of Phase One of the Tartan Downs housing development. It follows several months of detailed planning, technical review, engineering analysis and financial coordination between the project partners.

“Undertaking this early earthwork ensures that the project maintains momentum and is well positioned for an efficient construction start once all elements of Phase One are approved,” says Kent MacIntyre, President, Urban Neighbourhood Development Association. “We’re proud to see visible progress taking place at the site and remain committed to developing this project with care, responsibility and long-term benefit to the community in mind.”

The current scope of activity includes grading, installation of sewer, water and stormwater systems and preliminary street alignment. These efforts are foundational in nature and are being undertaken to ensure the site is ready for construction once all remaining approvals, financing and timeline are finalized.

At this stage, the activity on site should be viewed as preparatory work only and does not represent the full launch of construction. Additional details regarding the overall development, including scope, timelines, financing, design and community benefits, will be shared through a formal announcement in the new year.
