Cape Breton University is proud to welcome local secondary school students to campus for the 2025 CBVRCE Science Fair. The event will take place on Wednesday, March 19, from 9:00am-2:00pn in the Verschuren Centre Atrium, with an awards ceremony to follow the next evening.
This year’s Science Fair continues a longstanding tradition of fostering scientific curiosity and innovation among Cape Breton’s youth. More than 40 students from grades 7-12 will showcase their research and compete in junior, intermediate and senior categories, with gold, silver and bronze medals awarded in each. In addition, special awards will be presented by CBU’s School of Science and Technology, Let’s Talk Science, Island WISE and Engineers Nova Scotia, recognizing outstanding achievements in various scientific disciplines.
“Welcoming secondary students to campus for events like the CBVRCE Science Fair allows them to experience Cape Breton University in a meaningful and inspiring way,” says Matthew Brown, Manager of Canadian Recruitment. “They get to connect with our professors, explore our campus and engage in hands-on learning, all while building personal and positive connections with academics, science and CBU.”
Hosting the CBVRCE Science Fair reflects CBU’s commitment to education beyond its own classrooms, encouraging young learners to think critically and creatively about the world around them. Adam Brown, CBU’s Sustainability Coordinator,
“We live in an increasingly complex and technical world. In 2017, Dell Technologies projected that 85 per cent of jobs in 2030 hadn’t been invented yet. For environmentally, economically and socially sustainable prosperity, we benefit from being life-long learners in science, creativity and problem solving,” says Adam Brown. “CBU’s contribution to education in Cape Breton is multiplied when we support learners earlier in their journeys. The fair’s participants certainly won’t all become scientists or attend CBU, but we intend for all to benefit from the experience!”
In addition to student projects, CBU will welcome partners Let’s Talk Science, Island WISE, the Verschuren Centre and the School of Science and Technology, who will provide added value through hands-on learning experiences, educational resources and interactions with instructors, student researchers and volunteers. The event is also open to members of the community, who are encouraged to attend, support the participants and engage with the projects on display.
