CBU Congratulates Dr. Rob Power on Leadership Award

Cape Breton University is proud to announce that Associate Professor, Dr. Rob Power, has been selected as a recipient of the 2025 Association of Atlantic Universities (AAU) Anne Marie MacKinnon Education Leadership Award. This award recognizes an individual who significantly influences teaching practice and the quality and breadth of student learning experiences beyond their own teaching assignment and context. 

“We are very proud of Dr. Power for this well-deserved recognition,” says CBU President, David Dingwall. “His dedication to accessibility, innovation and collaboration has left a lasting impact on our students, colleagues and the broader community. Dr. Power’s leadership has strengthened the learning environment at CBU, and this award is a testament to his commitment to ensuring that education is both inclusive and transformative.”  

Dr. Power was recognized for his unwavering commitment to accessibility, innovation and collaboration in teaching and learning. As an assistant professor at Cape Breton University, Dr. Power has helped shape the School of Education and Health, leading advancements in accessible education and improved digital pedagogy.  

Dr. Power played a crucial role in CBU’s move to online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic, where his influence and leadership philosophy contributed to the development of the University Teaching Program and Start Smart student orientation course. He has also been a key contributor to the development of innovative programs at CBU, including the accelerated Bachelor of Education, and new Master of Education offerings.  

“I’m truly honoured to be recognized by my peers for doing what I feel so passionate about, which is to help everyone access the most engaging and rewarding learning experiences possible,” says Dr. Power. 

In addition to his work at CBU, Dr. Power continues to advocate for inclusivity and innovation in education throughout the community. Through both his books Everyday Instructional Design and The ALT Text: Accessible Learning with Technology, and his popular YouTube channel, Dr. Power continues to advocate for the sharing of knowledge freely and widely.
