Cape Breton University (CBU) is proud to announce its support of the Host Organizing Committee for the upcoming U18 IIHF Women’s World Hockey Championships taking place January 10-18 in Sydney and Membertou.

As the first arena in Canada dedicated to women’s hockey at the Kehoe Forum, CBU will help Cape Breton welcome the world and celebrate the development of women’s and girls’ hockey through various initiatives.

CBU’s commitment includes significant in-kind contributions that will directly support the success of the tournament. These in-kind contributions include:

  • Use of CBU vans for transportation of officials and VIPs
  • More than 150 Bachelor of Tourism and Hospitality Management students to serve in volunteer roles
  • Access to meeting spaces and conference/event facilities across campus
  • Use of the Kehoe Forum for any team pre-competition activities
  • Access to the CBU high performance training centre for teams as well as recreational facilities on campus
  • A CBU-hosted reception to showcase the beauty, culture and hospitality of Cape Breton Island

“Cape Breton University is honoured to partner with the Host Organizing Committee to bring this world-class event to our community,” says CBU President David Dingwall. “As the home of women’s hockey in Canada, CBU is committed to supporting these incredible athletes and ensuring they experience the very best of Cape Breton Island’s hospitality. We are proud to welcome the world to our campus and our community.”

“Having the Kehoe Forum, the first arena in Canada dedicated to women’s hockey, is truly inspiring,” says Leijsa Wilton, Chair, Host Organizing Committee of the IIHF U-18 Women’s World Championships. “For young girls, it’s powerful to play where women’s hockey is celebrated. Our work in trying to break down barriers to equality for girls and women in hockey is coming to fruition with these top-ranked international players being showcased in Cape Breton.”

This support reflects CBU’s dedication to showcasing what Cape Breton and CBU has to offer, while reinforcing the university’s commitment to community while advancing equity in sport and empowering the next generation of female leaders on and off the ice.
