To the CBU Community,
As we approach Wikewiku’s (October), known in Nova Scotia as Mi’kmaw History Month, two significant days of reflection and commemoration also approach. We invite you to join us in recognizing both the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on Tuesday, September 30, and Mi’kmaq Treaty Day on Wednesday, October 1, 2025.
The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, also known as Orange Shirt Day, is a time to honour the survivors of residential schools, their families and their communities. This day reminds us to acknowledge the lasting impacts and intergenerational effects of these institutions. This day also offers an opportunity to acknowledge our shared history and commit to the ongoing journey of reconciliation. Wearing orange on this day symbolizes your support for Truth and Reconciliation with Indigenous peoples.
Following the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, on October 1, we mark Mi’kmaq Treaty Day. This is a day of celebration of the enduring relationship between the Mi’kmaq and the Crown, as outlined in the Peace and Friendship Treaties. Mi’kmaq Treaty Day highlights the rights, responsibilities and partnerships defined by these historic agreements, while reminding us all of the ongoing importance of honoring these commitments. Unama’ki College’s services will be closed on October 1, to recognize this important day.
We encourage everyone to take this time to learn, reflect and engage in activities that support reconciliation and honour the spirit of the treaties. Together, we can continue to foster understanding, respect and positive relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples.
Wela’liek (Thank you),
