Cape Breton University is pleased to announce two leadership appointments in the School of Arts and Social Sciences, Dr. Chris McDonald as Interim Dean and Sarah MacRae as Assistant Dean, effective immediately.
Dr. Chris McDonald brings a strong record of academic leadership and research excellence to his new role. A long-time faculty member in the School of Arts and Social Sciences, Dr. McDonald has taught courses in ethnomusicology, music theory and popular music. His research interests span Atlantic Canadian folk traditions, including Cape Breton’s distinctive piano style, and the cultural role of rock music, particularly in relation to social class.
He is the author of Rush, Rock Music, and the Middle Class: Dreaming in Middletown (Indiana University Press) and has contributed to several reference works, including The New Grove Encyclopedia of American Music, The Sage Encyclopedia of Music and Culture and The Routledge Encyclopedia of the Blues. Dr. McDonald has also served as CBU’s Teaching Chair in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and as Chair of the School’s Executive Committee. His thoughtful leadership and commitment to inclusive education make him an ideal fit for this interim appointment.
Joining him in leadership is Sarah MacRae, stepping into the role of Assistant Dean. A proud CBU alumna and the first graduate of the BACS Program (Honours in Communication), Sarah brings more than 15 years of institutional experience in teaching, academic advising and student support. She is known for her equity-informed approach, deep understanding of the student journey and unwavering commitment to experiential learning.
In her new role, Sarah will support students in academic advising, course overload approvals, appeals and compassionate withdrawals, helping to ensure a positive and supported experience for all.
“As we continue to grow and evolve as an institution, it is critical that our academic leadership continues to reflect vision and care,” says President and Vice-Chancellor, David C. Dingwall. “Dr. McDonald and Ms. MacRae exemplify this balance through their dedication to students, scholarship and the values of Cape Breton University. Their leadership will strengthen our School of Arts and Social Sciences and support its continued success.”
Please join us in congratulating Dr. Chris McDonald and Sarah MacRae as they begin these important new roles at CBU.
