Campus Planning – Space and Relocation Update (May 2023)

To the Campus Community,

To meet the growing needs of our campus community, CBU recently tabled to our Board of Governors its most significant capital plan in University history.

As a university committed to exceptional teaching and learning, we’re investing in you through new space and campus upgrades both in and outside of the classroom. Some of this work has already begun and there is much work to do in the coming months and years with significant renovations to the Canada Games Complex and Marconi Campus, and brand-new builds such as the Cape Breton Medical Campus building and the Centre for Discovery and Innovation.

A web page has been created where you can find information on each project. Renderings, important milestones and frequently asked questions will be added and updated as more information becomes available.

In the meantime, please make note of these important changes:

  • While construction begins in the core of the Canada Games Complex, effective immediately the Nancy Dingwall Health and Counselling Centre has moved to MacDonald Residence. All appointments will now happen there. Appointments are still to be booked by calling 902-563-1359 or emailing healthservices@cbu.ca.
  • The Events Management team has moved to the back office in the Manson Lounge. Events and rooms are still to be booked through the events portal. The Manson Lounge main space is still available for employees to use.
  • Retired faculty members who previously used flex space in the Manson Lounge will now be located in the Welcome Centre.
  • Faculty members of the Bachelor of Social Work program will join colleagues from Public Health in the heart of Campus Expansion (CE – second floor).
  • Installation on the new Dome at the Cape Breton Health and Recreation Complex is set to begin in July, with plans to open to the public in August or early September.
  • The Capers High Performance, Strength and Conditioning Centre will move to the south end of the Canada Games Complex (former subway location). This space is expected to open for training in the next month.

In the coming days and weeks, you’ll notice more construction and signage around campus. We ask that you please practice patience and respect construction boundaries. We also understand that these changes may be difficult for some, and we appreciate the flexibility and perseverance each of you have shown as we work through these adjustments and get closer to a new CBU.

We will continue to update you as more information becomes available and these exciting projects progress.

Sincerely,

Shauna Kelly, Chief of Staff
