An Open Letter to High School Graduates

To the Cape Breton Island graduating class of 2020,

On behalf of myself, the Cape Breton University Board of Governors, and our faculty and staff, I extend a very sincere congratulations to you on your high school graduation. Your hard work and commitment have paid off. While it likely wasn’t always easy, you now have something that no one can ever take away from you – the strong foundation of education. For it is with education that you will change the world.

While it is unfortunate the COVID-19 pandemic has altered your high school graduation plans, it does not take away from this monumental occasion in your lives. In fact, it reinforces the strength, the determination, and the perseverance that your generation embodies. These traits will serve you well as you become the leaders of tomorrow. Disruption has always been a catalyst for great change, and the world will be watching as you discover what that great change is, and show us how to live it.

While the people of Cape Breton Island come from all over the globe to make our region special, you too will go out into the world when the time is right. You’ll embrace all this great world has to offer and make improvements so you can leave it better than you found it. Until then, whether you live in the North, South, East or West of Unama’ki, we truly are all in this together. And it is together you will thrive as you embark on the next chapter of your lives.

Again, congratulations to the Cape Breton Island graduating class of 2020. I am so proud of you.

Yours very truly,

David C. Dingwall
