The View From Up Here: A Documentary Series Launch

Join us in the Rotary Music Performance Room (CE263e) on Tuesday, October 14, at 11:40am for the official CBU launch of The View From Up Here.

This event is free to attend, and light refreshments will be provided.

This six-part documentary series uses “found footage” unearthed from local news broadcasts on Thunder Bay, Ontario’s CKPR TV station between 1958 and 1978 to take a satirical look at historical themes and events in a remote region of Canada. Presented in a news show format, the series provides a small-town Canadian perspective on local, national and world history in the twentieth century.

The View From Up Here is the creation of Ron Harpelle and Kelly Saxberg, who, together with a team of filmmakers, animators, and writers including CBU’s C. Nathan Hatton, bring everyday life in “small town” Canada to the world. The series is an extension of the Reel Memories of the Lakehead project, which saw the digitization and indexing of 235 hours of 16mm film from the local news. The screening will include a discussion of using archival film to tell stories of broad-reaching historical significance.
