Supporting Student Success: Meet Alyssa Campbell

With Week of Welcome in full swing, the Cape Breton University campus is bustling with energy as new and returning students dive into an exciting Fall semester. For Alyssa Campbell, the excitement of being back on campus and the opportunity to learn, connect and grow is truly something to celebrate.

From Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Alyssa Campbell is in her final year of the Bachelor of Science program with a major in Biology. Her journey to CBU was driven by the desire to receive a high-quality education close to home. Being close to home has opened doors to education and professional opportunities for Alyssa, for which she is very grateful.

As a Peer Success Mentor at CBU’s Advising Centre, Alyssa collaborates with a team of fellow students who eagerly anticipate the influx of new students during Week of Welcome and provide support, guidance and insights into campus resources. Alyssa understands the importance of navigating the campus and its services, setting students on a path to academic success from day one.

Alyssa’s role as a Peer Success Mentor is rooted in ensuring a smooth transition for new students. For new students, Alyssa recommends exploring the Advising Centre, where you can connect with Peer Success Mentors, Academic Advisors, Academic Success Coaches and International Student Advisors, who provide invaluable assistance with study and work permits, health insurance, and acclimatization to life in Canada. “As Peer Success Mentors, our main role is to help provide a seamless transition into university life for incoming students,” she says. “Here, we can connect you with resources across campus to support you throughout your studies. Our doors at the Advising Centre are open, and we welcome anyone who would like to meet with our team, or even if you’d just like to pop in and say hello!”

Her experiences at CBU have equipped Alyssa to be an excellent resource for other students. Having faced similar challenges and the excitement of a first year, she understands the importance of guidance and support. Reflecting on her time at CBU, Alyssa fondly recalls her experiences, from learning in Dr. Dave McCorquodale’s engaging biology class to embarking on field outings. “There have been many highlights throughout my three years at CBU; learning from amazing instructors, the friends I’ve met throughout my program, getting to meet and help students from all over the world, and working with the incredible Student Affairs team,” says Alyssa.

During the Fall 2023 Week of Welcome, Alyssa and her fellow Peer Success Mentors are excited to continue to welcome students to, or back to, campus. “We are here to educate you on campus resources and share tips for academic success,” says Alyssa. “Your success is our priority, and we’re here to help every step of the way.”
