As a proud alumni of Cape Breton University, Dr. Lauren DeDieu looks back on her experience at CBU as foundational. Graduating in 2011, she earned both a 4-year Bachelor of Science with honours in math and a 3-year Bachelor of Arts. Lauren has since carved out a distinguished career in the field of mathematics, specifically in math education. Most recently, she was awarded the 2024 Margaret Sinclair Memorial Award. This prestigious recognition highlights her significant contributions to the world of mathematics education and underscores the solid foundation she built during her time at CBU.
Reflecting on her years at CBU, Lauren recalls how the university provided her with more than just technical knowledge. “Cape Breton University was more than just a place of learning; it was where I developed an academic appreciation for the beauty and intricacy of mathematics,” says Lauren. “The faculty’s support challenged me to think creatively and critically, qualities that have been essential in my career as a mathematics educator.”
Lauren’s achievements are a direct reflection of the strong foundation she built at CBU. ” The encouragement I received from my professors at CBU inspired me to pursue graduate studies in mathematics,” she notes. “The intellectual curiosity and rigor instilled in me at CBU have been fundamental to my professional growth and success.”
In May of this year, Lauren was delighted to discover a CBU Alumni event was happening in Calgary, where she currently lives and teaches. The taste of home was a reminder of the strong sense of community and support that Cape Breton University offers, even far away from campus.
Lauren is dedicated to encouraging, teaching and supporting the next generation of female mathematicians. Through her role as a mentor and educator, she actively promotes the advancement of women in mathematics, underscoring her contributions to mathematics education and fostering a supportive environment for aspiring female mathematicians. By sharing her knowledge and providing guidance, she’s helping pave the way for future generations, ensuring they have the resources and encouragement to succeed.
Today, as she continues to make valuable contributions to mathematics education, Lauren remains a proud representative of CBU’s legacy. Her accomplishments reflect not only her individual dedication but also CBU’s commitment to empowering students to reach their full potential. Her story is a powerful reminder of how a solid educational foundation can open doors to remarkable opportunities and achievements.
