After passionately working in the Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) sector for the past 11 years, Mahipal Modhvadiya of Porbandar, India, was seeking a way to enhance his knowledge and advance his career in the field he loves. Following some research, CBU’s Post-Baccalaureate Diploma in OH&S provided him with the perfect opportunity to do so, while immersing himself in a new country.
“CBU stands out for its welcoming and diverse community, supportive employees and practical, industry-focused programs,” says Mahipal. “The University provides an excellent learning environment for students, offering a balance of theoretical knowledge and real-world applications. The smaller class sizes also allow for better student-professor interaction, making learning more engaging and personalized.”
Mahipal began his career as an EHS Supervisor in 2013, and by 2015, he had the opportunity to work with a German company in Doha, Qatar, which added depth to his experience and increased his knowledge of international safety standards. During this time, a friend approached Mahipal after studying for their Master’s in Environment in Canada and encouraged him to explore new opportunities here, knowing he sought growth and a better work-life balance.
Alongside his studies, Mahipal worked as a Construction Safety Officer (CSO) at King’s Wharf, a role that he described as both challenging and inspiring. With the Spring 2025 Convocation fast approaching, Mahipal has begun reflecting on all he will miss about CBU. “There are so many things I will miss about CBU, the kind employees, campus life, conversations in the cafeteria, the anticipation of final grades, the support from my professors and the countless peaceful study hours in the library,” he says. “CBU has given me more than just an education; it has given me lifelong memories.”
Recently, Mahipal spent many hours studying and preparing for his National Construction Safety Officer (NSCO) exam, which he passed with flying colours in February, 2025. Having acquired this certificate and on his way to a CBU Convocation, Mahipal received a job offer from the Municipal Group of Companies (Dexter Construction) for the role of Health and Safety Advisor. He accepted and is excited to soon begin this new role.
In his personal life, Mahipal has already been telling friends and family what a wonderful experience it has been attending CBU and living in Cape Breton in hopes they may also explore the possibility of a higher education in Canada. In fact, he knows a handful of people who have already enrolled in the same program based on his suggestion, with aspirations of a career path similar to his own.
To the future students of CBU, Mahipal encourages you to never stop believing in yourself. “The journey of studying abroad comes with unique challenges, but with hard work, persistence and the right mindset, your dreams are achievable,” he begins. “Stay focused, keep learning and always be open to new opportunities because you never know where they may lead you!”
