Celebrating Mardi Gras at CBU

Months of hard work and planning are about to come to fruition for Bachelor of Hospitality and Tourism Management (BHTM) students as their sold-out Mardi Gras event unfolds Tuesday evening.

Students in the BHTM course Meetings, Conventions and Event Management, taught by CBU Instructor Jennifer Currie, will be hosting the celebration as their Speciality Event project for the semester. “Guests will be treated to music, a delicious meal and fabulous entertainment that is sure to bring the energy of a New Orleans Mardi Gras celebration right here to our campus,” says Jennifer.

BHTM student Nancy Mhazo has been the marketing and communications team leader throughout the project and says being in a leadership position has been a great learning experience. “My organization and communication skills have developed so much during my time at CBU, and this project has taught me how to work under pressure to provide a great event,” says Nancy.

Throughout the course, students meet four times a week, splitting their time between academic requirements and event organization labs. The students are responsible for the entirety of the Specialty Event from choosing the theme and promoting the event, to planning, cooking, serving and even organizing entertainment. It’s a fully immersive hands-on learning experience that results in an event students can take pride in for years to come.

This year, 18 tourism industry employers will be in attendance for a firsthand look at what CBU students can accomplish. “I am so excited to see so many different people at the event,” says Nancy. “My classmates and I will be working together in a professional manner to ensure great guest satisfaction.”
The BHTM students would like to thank their sponsor Sydney Credit Union for their ongoing support and assistance in bringing CBU Mardi Gras 2019 to life.
