CBU to Host Doctors Nova Scotia Youth Run

On Sunday, June 12, 2022, Cape Breton University will host the Doctors Nova Scotia Youth Run, presented by Cape Breton Fiddlers Marathon and Cape Breton University. The annual Youth Run strives to reinforce the importance of physical activity amongst youth, and is open to participants of all fitness levels with options for both a 2km and 4km option. There will also be a tiny trot for preschool-aged children.

CBU Bachelor of Science student and Capers soccer player, Janelle Tierney, participated in the Youth Run through the ages of 6-12 and then again at the half-marathon relay when she turned 15. She says running with friends while getting involved with a community event was such a rewarding experience and encourages other young athletes to give it a try.

“The run encouraged me to stay active, and participating at such a young age really got me interested in running,” says Janelle. “That’s part of the reason I stayed with it years later; I did well but more importantly I enjoyed it which led me to join other events such as cross country running and track and field as I got older.”

This year, Janelle will be attending the event as a volunteer and says she can’t wait to see the community come together with the goal of teaching youth the importance exercise plays in a healthy lifestyle.

“I have always had great experiences participating in the run and I want the next generation of youth to get that same experience while having fun and staying active,” she says.

Activities will begin at the Cape Breton Health and Recreation Complex track on campus at 9:30am with the run kicking off at 10:00am. For more information on the Doctors Nova Scotia Youth Run, visit capebretonfiddlersrun.com or contact dnsyouthrun@capebretonfiddlersrun.com
