The Full University Experience at CBU [2min Read]

Being from Sydney, Nova Scotia and graduating from Riverview High School last June, I knew I wanted to attend Cape Breton University so I could stay close to home and family. Growing up I thought I had to go away for university to get the “full experience.” My original plan was to complete one year at CBU to understand what university was like. After that, I had every intention of leaving CBU to attend a different university. However, within the first few weeks I knew this is where I was meant to be.

Currently, I’m trying to decide what career I’ll pursue after my degree. My advisors have been extremely helpful in keeping my options open while exploring my interests. I’m only a few months into my degree and I already feel completely a part of the CBU community. The faculty members here become like family; they know you by name and truly care about your success. Not only am I close to my family in Cape Breton, but a lot of my friends made the decision to attend CBU too. It makes the transition from high school to university less stressful knowing you have new and old friends ready to greet you everyday. There have been times when we have all bunkered down in study rooms during our breaks, grabbed snacks and got some studying done.

Aside from getting a good study session in, there is always something happening on campus that keeps things interesting. Even if you are living off campus like I am, you are included and welcomed at every CBU event. Another aspect that I love about CBU is the pride! Being in the stands when our Men’s Soccer team won the AUS Championship was so exciting! The CBU pride continued when our Men’s Soccer team became the National Champions and our Women’s Soccer team became the second best team in Canada. I am so #CBUproud to be a part of it all!

I have always loved being involved in school activities and it is easy to get involved here. With a large selection of societies, activities and sports to get involved with, you are sure to find a group of people who share the same interests as you. CBU is a smaller university, but this means it is easy to accomplish your goals. For example, I am only in the first year of my degree and I am already a part of CBU’s first ever Social Squad!

I love sharing my story, especially when it involves such a great place like CBU. The Social Squad allows me to share my CBU story by updating social media with the latest and greatest things happening at the university. My hope is that local high school students in Cape Breton learn they do not have to cross the causeway for a fantastic university experience. If anyone ever has any questions feel free to find me on Instagram, Twitter or Facebook. I would love to answer any questions you have about CBU and share more of my experience with you!
