CBU offers a wide variety of supports and resources to help ensure your success as a university student. Often, that support comes from fellow students in the form of Peer Mentors and Student Navigators. CBU’s Peer Mentors support new students in their transition to life on campus, while Student Navigators help students in all stages connect with relevant campus service providers.
To help give you a better idea of who these student employees are and how they can help you, here are some answers to the most frequently asked questions about Student Navigators and Peer Mentors.
What is a Peer Mentor?
Peer Mentors are undergraduate students in three- and four-year programs who have shown exemplary leadership skills and have been highly engaged in campus life during their time at CBU.
What does a Peer Mentor do?
The Peer Mentor’s role is to assist new undergraduate students in accessing information and connecting to services at CBU. Mentors help students get acquainted with the many resources offered at CBU, such as Start Smart, to help them begin their academic journey with confidence. They also host regular events to provide new students with opportunities to meet peers with similar interests.
Why should students connect with a Peer Mentor?
Students should connect with Peer Mentors early in their first year to better understand the resources and supports available at CBU and associated off-campus locations. Students can connect with Peer Success Mentors to help with their unique needs by emailing student_mentors@cbu.ca.
What is a Student Navigator?
Student Navigators are responsible for helping the Student Affairs department with a variety of jobs aimed at supporting students.
What does a Student Navigator Do?
Student Navigators assist with tasks such as triaging student needs in the Advising Centre, assisting students with their CBU Email, Moodle and Compass Student Account and leading initiatives such as online registration support sessions.
Where can I find a Student Navigator?
Student Navigators can be found in two locations: the main desk in the Advising Centre in the Marvin Harvey Building and in the main lobby area of Cineplex Cinemas Sydney (325 Prince St.). They are available to assist students from 8:30am-4:30pm, Monday to Friday.
How do I become a Student Navigator or Peer Mentor?
Student Affairs is always looking for enthusiastic and experienced students to take on these leadership roles. The need for these positions is reviewed at the start of each semester and a posting is made on the CBU Student Job Opportunities webpage.
Please note that these positions are for students who have at least one semester of experience volunteering or working on campus.
