Job Title- Museum Coordinator

The coordinator position is a 14 week work term at $16.70/hour with an approximate start date of May 26, 2025. The position is 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday, with some flexibility for weekend & evening events.

 

Job Description

The Museum is seeking to fill a summer position to support its village museum operations. The Museum Coordinator is responsible for the quality and safety of daily museum operations. They will welcome visitors to the museum, give tours of the historic collection, handle communications, increase community interest in the museum, bring people together and supervise the Museum Interpreter. They will collaborate with and support volunteers working to achieve the summer workplan objectives. Training and support will be provided by members of the museum’s Operations Committee. Additional training is available through the Association of Nova Scotia Museums.

 

About us

The Waverley Heritage Museum is a small community museum operated by the Waverley Heritage Society, a volunteer-driven, non-profit society. We tell stories about Waverley and surrounding communities, making the stories relevant today and making the museum an inclusive space where people come together to learn, explore and have fun.

 

What you will learn

Under the direction of the management team, the successful applicant will develop skills in the following areas of responsibility:

Supervising staff: Ensuring the Museum Interpreter (MI) has a quality work experience by providing direction, structure, motivational support and feedback.

Communications: Using creative writing skills to increase community engagement, interest in the museum and networking through email, social media and the web.

Plan and Organize: Developing and delivering public programs and special events on and off site in person.

Public speaking: Welcoming and interacting with visitors and developing and conducting guided tours.

Collaboration: Working with the MI and volunteers while maintaining a safe and inclusive work environment.

Museum Collection: Understanding the responsibilities of collection management in the areas of preserving, researching, interpreting and exhibiting cultural and historic objects and providing access to these objects.

 

Qualifications

Experience supervising employees or leading teams is a necessity.

Interest in history.

Experience working with the public.

The ability to work independently, alone at times and as part of the team.

Excellent English verbal and written communication skills.

Time management and organizational skills.

Creativity and problem-solving skills.

Comfort with programs such as Microsoft, CANVA and working with photos, audio and video.

Reliable transportation to the museum, as there is no available public transit.

The ability to lift and carry furniture and materials and general maintenance

 

Additional Requirements

For the position to qualify for government funding, the applicant must have a valid Social Insurance Number and be legally entitled to work in Canada. Applicants must be enrolled in a full-time program for the coming fall term at an accredited post-secondary institution. Applicants from specific co-op programs may be exempt from this requirement. Applicants must have resided in Nova Scotia for at least six months prior to the work term. A Criminal Records Check and Vulnerable Sector check will be required.
