We are hiring a Sustainability Co-op Student
Position summary:
The Halifax Port Authority is seeking a Sustainability Co-op Student for a four-month term.
Reporting to the Manager, Sustainability, this position supports the Sustainability team in furthering
the commitments outlined in our 2024 – 2030 Sustainability Strategy. This role will focus on advancing
initiatives related to environmental care, community building, and decarbonization. The successful
candidate will also be encouraged to identify and recommend new initiatives that align with the
strategy’s focus areas, with guidance and support from the department.
What you’ll do:
Support the advancement of strategic sustainability initiatives based on academic
background and interests (e.g., emissions accounting, environmental monitoring programs,
community integration, and more)
Prepare project management-related documentation for all assigned initiatives, including
projects on a page, project charters, evaluation frameworks, and other supporting materials
as required
Support the development of programs within our ISO 140001 certified Environmental
Management System (EMS), where relevant
Contribute to internal communications and knowledge sharing through preparing posts,
presentations, and educational materials
Plan and execute a sustainability activation for One Port City Day, the Port of Halifax’s
annual community celebration focused on connecting the port and the city
Work independently on assigned projects, with regular review and guidance from the
Manager, Sustainability, and collaborate with other teams and departments as needed
Deliver a final presentation summarizing your co-op experience and key learnings
Participate in site visits, fieldwork, and hands-on learning opportunities, while primarily
working in an office-based environment
Other duties as assigned to support the advancement of the Sustainability Strategy
What you’ll bring:
Current enrollment in a post-secondary program with a sustainability focus or related field,
ideally combined with project management
Multidisciplinary understanding of sustainability concepts and practices
Strong attention to detail and organizational skills to manage multiple tasks efficiently and
ensure accuracy in documentation
Excellent problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyze challenges and develop effective
solutions
Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate clearly across
teams and departments
Demonstrated project management skills, including planning, tracking, and evaluating
initiatives
Ability to work independently and collaboratively within defined expectations
Prior experience with fieldwork, environmental monitoring, decarbonization, or community
engagement is considered an asset

Position Term
The term of this position is from May 4, 2026 to August 28, 2026.
Compensation
The compensation for this student position will be dependent on the program and year of study. The
minimum rate of this position is $20.50 per hour.
Additional Conditions
• Successful completion and maintenance of a Criminal Record Check.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a Restricted Area Pass (RAP).
