Applicants must be between the ages of 15-30 and be a Canadian citizen/permanent resident as per the eligibility criteria of the of the grant program(s) funding this role. Preferred candidate is a current student (enrolled in a work integrated learning program) and returning to school in the fall of 2025. Applicants may be required to complete a pre-screening survey to determine if they meet the eligibility criteria. International applicants with work visas are ineligible under this funding program and will not be considered for this role.

STEAM Camp Leaders will use their creativity to plan fun camp activities and field trips on a variety of themed topics for campers ages 5-8 or 9-12. Discovery Centre is offering multiple summer camps in 2025 that explore societally relevant topics such as Environmental and Climate Science, Biodiversity, Chemistry and Plant Science. Each STEAM Camp Leader will be assigned based on their experience, background, and interest.

The STEAM Camp Leader will bring their energy and communication skills to engage and inspire youth in a classroom setting on a daily basis. The position provides experience working in a team setting, training staff, managing a budget, coordinating and delivering educational and recreational programs, building relationships with local community organizations, developing communication and leadership skills, and supervising youth.

Description of Tasks:

The STEAM Camp Leader works in the Science Education department and reports to the Manager of Science Education. The primary tasks of the position are:

  • Working collaboratively with STEAM Camp Counsellors to plan and develop a series of hands-on STEAM-based camp activities, games, and park trips for seven themed weeks throughout the summer
  • Train and work collaboratively with up to three STEAM Camp Counsellors in presenting activities and games to up to 22 children and/or youth (ages 5-8 or 9-12) in a classroom and science centre/museum setting
  • Providing guidance and direction to the STEAM Camp Counsellors and delegating daily tasks to the counsellors as needed to ensure smooth camp delivery from activity prep, to camp facilitation, to cleanup, ensure safety of campers and camp staff
  • Coordinating/purchasing supplies, working within the program budget
  • Organizing and maintaining camper records, ensuring privacy and confidentiality
  • Preparing summary reports on each camp week and a final report on the program
  • Liaising with parents or guardians to ensure campers needs are met and any disciplinary issues are addressed
  • Assisting, as needed, with Camp promotional activities
  • Supporting camp sign in/out processes as needed

Qualifications:

Education: Post-secondary studies in science, education, recreation, or a related discipline

Experience: Experience in child supervision, preferably in an educational, recreational, museum or camp setting; experience in preparing and presenting workshops an asset

Language Requirements: Fluency in English is required; additional languages (especially French) considered an asset

Other Qualifications:

  • Proficient in MS Office applications
  • Must pass a criminal record check/vulnerable sector check
  • First Aid and WHMIS certification an asset
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license (the ability to travel is necessary for camps involving community outreach)
