Cape Breton University is delighted to recognize honour a woman who, for more than two decades, has dedicated her life to advancing education, empowering communities, championing innovation, and uplifting Cape Breton Island on the national and international stage, Ms. Annette Verschuren.
For 20 years, Annette Verschuren has served as Chancellor of Cape Breton University, becoming the longest-serving Chancellor in Canadian history and one of the most influential leaders to represent this institution. Born and raised in North Sydney, Cape Breton and the child of immigrant parents, she has never forgot where she comes from. Her deep pride in her Island roots has guided her life’s work and shaped her remarkable career as a business leader, philanthropist, mentor, and advocate for community development.
Throughout her tenure as Chancellor, Annette has presided
over countless convocations, inspiring generations of graduates as they crossed the stage to begin their life’s journey. She has been a constant source of encouragement, a voice reminding students to dream boldly, work hard and lead with heart and passion. Her presence and her steadfast support helped guide the University through moments of celebration, challenge, and transformation.
Beyond the walls of CBU, Annette’s influence is recognized across Canada and around the world. From her ground breaking leadership at Home Depot Canada and NRStor, to her work championing clean energy, rural development, and entrepreneurial thinking, she has demonstrated that great leaders not only achieve success, they create opportunities for others. Her commitment to empowering women in leadership, supporting young innovators and strengthening communities continues to ripple outward, shaping futures far beyond Cape Breton.
As Chancellor, Annette also helped build pathways for CBU’s growth, lending her voice to major initiatives and serving as co-chair of the Forever CBU campaign. Annette also had a great impact on past fundraising campaigns such as, Creating Champions, Future First, the Shannon School of Business as well as the building that bares her name, The Verschuren Centre. Her belief in the potential of this University and the people who work here, has left a lasting imprint on our institution and our Island.
