Ken Oakes

Associate Professor

Ken received two college diplomas in Fish and Wildlife Management from Sir Sandford Fleming College, a B.Sc. in Fisheries Biology and a Ph.D. investigating the role of reactive oxygen species in mediating endocrine disruption in fish exposed to pulp and paper mill effluents from the University of Guelph. He then spent 7 years at the University of Waterloo as a Postdoctoral Fellow/Research Associate in the Dept. of Biology where he studied the impacts of municipal wastewater effluents on aquatic organisms. Ken was a Lecturer, again at the University of Waterloo, teaching a diverse array of ecology, toxicology, cell biology and human anatomy courses before coming to Cape Breton University as the Industrial Research Chair in Environmental Remediation and Assistant Professor in Biology. Now an Associate Professor of Biology, Ken has over 60 publications in peer-reviewed journals and supervised numerous undergraduate and graduate theses.
