Salary Range: $55,000 – $65,000 Annually
(Based on Qualifications and Experience)
General Description:
Under the Sipekne’katik Director of Family Well Being Program the role of the Youth Cultural Support Worker
is to apply cultural-based programs and mentorship for children and youth within the community. Assist in
the creation of land-based teachings, cultural group activities, accessing Elders and knowledge keepers for
children and youth.
Responsibilities:
• Work with Sipekne’katik Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and Traditional Healers to provide supports
as needed.
• Provide children and youth with cultural activities.
• Offer cultural supports information, and guidance.
• Design and implement children and youth cultural programs.
• Create community interest and awareness in cultural components of the family well-being
program which incorporate traditional and existing healthy relationships.
• Combination of knowledge in traditional and conventional teaching models that assists in is
community based.
• Create a mentoring program so that youth can learn to be cultural mentors.
• Assist in facilitating workshops for children, youth, and community programs by using a holistic
approach and encouragement in sharing circles and programs.
• Evaluate workshops and programs making sure that they meet the needs of children and youth.
• Create, maintain, and strengthen relationships with community members and resources.
• Provide one-on-one cultural support on a referral-based need.
• Maybe required to work after hours and some weekends for programs/events.
Qualifications and Experience/Skills:
• Child and youth diploma/degree, or two years relevant work experience and training in child and
youth service will be considered.
• Experience in facilitation skills and group presentations.
• Knowledge and practice in cultural activities, traditional values, and Mi’kmaw ways on knowing
and being.
• Must demonstrate knowledge of Medicine wheel, smudging, seven sacred teachings and
experience in creating safe spaces to facilitate sharing circles.
• Able to work independently and as part of a team.
• Strong interpersonal, communicational, and conflict resolution skill.
• Criminal, Vulnerable and Child Abuse Record check required.
• Must be in good standing with child welfare for at least five years.
• Experience working in a First Nations Community is preferred.
• Must have a valid driver’s license & reliable vehicle with automobile insurance.
