MGMT-1601 Introduction to Business

This introductory course offers an overview of the Canadian business organization and environment, presenting up-to-date issues that shape today’s business world. Topics representing economics, finance, human resources, managerial concepts and organizational structures provide a foundation for further business studies.

MRKT-1301 Introduction to Marketing

This course examines the concept of markets, market studies, market segmentation, consumer behaviour and the development of marketing strategies.

ECON-1103 Principles of Macroeconomics

This course examines topics around national income determination, unemployment, inflation, fiscal policy, the central bank, monetary policy, international trade and the balance of payments.

Derrick Hayes, Department Chair & Associate Professor, Accounting

Derrick Hayes is an Associate Professor of Accounting. He received his MBA (CED) and BBA from Cape Breton University, his Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA, CA, CMA) designation from CPA Nova Scotia; Certified Management Accountant (CMA) and Chartered Accountant (CA) designation from the legacy institutions. Derrick’s primary area of research is in community economic development and not-for-profit activities in Cape Breton. He has an extensive dossier of working in the community through sports and not-for-profit organizations.

Stephanie Gilbert, Assistant Professor

Dr. Stephanie Gilbert is an Assistant Professor of Organizational Management. Dr. Gilbert earned a PhD in Industrial-Organizational Psychology from Saint Mary’s University, a Master of Science in Health and Rehabilitation Sciences from Western University, and a BA (Honours) in Psychology and Business Administration from Wilfrid Laurier University. Her research examines predictors of leadership effectiveness and emergence, including leaders’ own motivation. Dr. Gilbert has worked with a variety of industries including healthcare, non-profit, for-profit, and start-up businesses and she teaches in the areas of leadership and organizational behaviour.

Dr. Sahand Ashtab, Assistant Professor, Supply Chain Management

Dr. Sahand Ashtab is an Assistant Professor of Supply Chain Management. He received his doctorate in Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering from the University of Windsor and has taught Supply Chain Management, Transportation and Logistics, Procurement and Supply Chain Management in both undergraduate and graduate levels. His research areas are supply chain management and operations research, and he has obtained funding for projects on Circular Economy in the province of Nova Scotia, Canada.

Like many institutions, CBU recognizes education completed at other post-secondary institutions. Students who have been successfully admitted to CBU and who already have some education behind them can apply for transfer credit.
