Damien Burns searched nationwide for a Master of Business Administration (MBA) program, but in the end, it was a MBA offered in his community that he chose. Damien discovered CBU’s MBA program through an advertisement in the local chamber of commerce newsletter.
For Damien choosing an institution to pursue his MBA truly came down to fit and balance. Damien wanted a MBA program that could be completed from the Yukon and that fit into his busy schedule. “It was important for me to be able to balance this degree with my busy family, my job and my family business. I did not want to spend significant time away from my family,” says Damien.
CBU offers the MBA program in six different locations, one of which being in Whitehorse. Damien completed his MBA in the inaugural CBU MBA cohort in the Yukon. The MBA offered at CBU focuses on community economic development, which was the perfect fit for Damien. “I had been looking for a MBA program that felt relevant to my interests and that would grow my skills in business and in the public service,” says Damien. Damien and his wife Betty own a thriving local toy store – Angellina’s Toy Boutique – named after one of their three daughters.
Once enrolled in the MBA program, Damien discovered new interests that propelled him to explore new career options. During his education at CBU, Damien worked as a Community Advisor with the Government of Yukon. In this field, he works directly with Yukon communities on matters of development, governance and sustainability. “I have now finished my degree and I have recently assumed the role of Director of Community Affairs for the Government of Yukon,” says Damien.
“I could not be more pleased with this program, in particular the innovative delivery model. CBU allowed me to take this program where I live, to learn with and from local colleagues, which allowed for a very rich educational experience. Additionally, there were high-quality professors that participated from across Canada whom added so much value to the class conversation,” says Damien.
With a new degree in hand and a solid foundation from the Shannon School of Business, Damien is now set to continue in his new role with the Government of Yukon and with his family business.
