Requirements

Education and Experience

  • College or Bachelor’s degree in Science, Education, Conservation or related field.
  • Three to five years supervisory experience and strong leadership skills.
  • Experiential Education experience is required; emphasis on conservation education and marine/freshwater biology.
  • Valid BC Driver’s License with a clean driving record; capable and comfortable with driving a 26’ gooseneck trailer combination and 32’ 5 ton truck, (professional training can be provided).
  • WHMIS an asset (training provided if needed).
  • Demonstrated project management experience and strong time management skills.
  • Animal care or husbandry experience an asset.

Technical Competencies

  • Excellent leadership and management skills and abilities.
  • Strong communication skills and writing skills.
  • General understanding and confidence with mechanical systems and vehicles.
  • Ability to lead and motivate a team as well as to work as a cooperative team member.
  • Must be creative, flexible and enthusiastic.

Working Conditions:

  • Workday often involves long hours and early mornings; flexible schedule (including weekends and Holidays);
  • Incumbents must be able to safely lift up to 50lbs to chest level.
  • The ability to safely operation Aquarium vehicles, including a 32’ truck (training provided);
  • Handling live marine invertebrates, fish and other program animals, as well as their food; exposure to live or dead animals may result in stings, punctures and cuts;
  • Travelling outside the Lower Mainland required; large stretches of time away from home (up to 8 weeks);
  • The role requires the employee to drive the AquaVan150 trucks and support vehicles for program delivery throughout Canada.
  • Exposure to seasonal temperature fluctuations in outdoor working areas.
  • Shared work space in a team environment open concept office environment;
  • Animal care and maintenance in the back of a large truck which requires the incumbent to work with controlled products.

ROLE OVERVIEW

The Assistant Manager, AquaVan 150 is responsible for overseeing the operational aspects of the AquaVan150 Program.  Working with the Manager, AquaVan, the Assistant Manager, AquaVan liaises with other internal departments and external stakeholders to ensure the success of the AquaVan150 program and its ability to support the goals of the organization.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

Provides leadership for the AquaVan150 Team by:

  • Acting as a primary support and mentor for the AquaVan150 Team through recruitment, performance reviews, regular coaching, recognition, development, scheduling, payroll, and job-related training.
  • Working with clients, funders and internal stakeholders to ensure the highest professional standards for the AquaVan150 program are met in accordance with the organizational goals and objectives.
  • Creating team and individual S.M.A.R.T. targets in line with departmental objectives.
  • Overseeing all logistics, planning and delivery of the AquaVan150 program to ensure successful outreach delivery in communities throughout Canada.

Ensures Quality AquaVan150 Programming by:

  • Working as project manager for AquaVan150 for the duration of the first year of this national program through to December 2017.
  • Conducting regular assessments of programs, delivery, logistics and client feedback, while working with the Manager Mobile Programs to ensure the ongoing success and sustainability of the AquaVan150 program.

Ensures Logistical and Administrative Accountability for the AquaVan150 Team by:

  • Developing, implementing and monitoring AquaVan150 operations; this includes year-long national tour delivery, grant objectives, data tracking, vehicle and system maintenance and project timelines in accordance with organizational policy and standards.
  • Overseeing the timely completion and effective implementation of AquaVan150 objectives, funding reports and grant deliverables.
  • Conducting regular review and evaluation of program delivery and providing recommendations for project efficiency and improvement.

Consistently improves the Vancouver Aquarium and its processes by:

  • Promptly aiding in Emergency protocol;
  • Maintaining organizational safety standards;
  • Continually improving our impact on the environment and greening of operations through support of EMS protocols;
  • Actively demonstrating the Aquarium’s values and code of conduct;
  • Performing additional duties as required.
