Position: Co-op Work Term Student
Work Location: Queen Square, 45 Alderney Drive, Dartmouth, Nova Scotia B2Y 2N6
Area of Selection: Open to students currently enrolled in a co-op program of a recognized university in Nova Scotia with specialization in science, engineering, environmental science, or other relevant disciplines.
Duration: January 5, 2017 to April 26, 2017 (there is some flexibility in start and end dates).
Hours of Work: 37.5 hours per week (standard work week).
Salary: Salary is based on the federal government’s published Student Rates of Pay, which is dependent on a number of factors, including the number of work terms completed and level of education. Skills and Abilities Requirements (essential):
- Ability to adapt to changing priorities and organize time with minimal supervision.
- Ability to communicate effectively (orally and in writing).
- Experience with a variety of software applications, such as word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software.
Asset Criteria (desirable, but not essential)
- Knowledge of environmental science and environmental issues
- Relevant work experience
- Experience entering, querying and reporting information from databases

- Effective Interpersonal Skills
- The successful candidates must obtain reliability security status prior to being hired.
Summary of Duties:
The Co-op student will assist Environment and Climate Change Canada with its efforts to improve compliance with federal environmental laws and regulations. Activities will involve regulations such as the Environmental Emergency Regulations, the PCB Regulations, the Storage Tank Systems for Petroleum Products and Allied Petroleum Products Regulations, and other regulations under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999 and the Fisheries Act.
Tasks undertaken by the student in this position may include:
- Create, verify and/or update various electronic databases (e.g. Microsoft Dynamics CRM) for specific targeted areas or regulations;
- Enter data from various reports into electronic databases, and conduct quality assessments of electronic data;
- Format data for use by compliance promotion program staff;
- Conduct an analysis of specific industry sectors;
- Call businesses and regulatees to verify contact information, confirm types of activities undertaken by the facility;
- Contact specific businesses or staff from other federal departments to inform them about specific regulations that may apply as well as upcoming workshops that may be of interest;
- Provide support to compliance promotion officers on development and delivery of compliance promotion material
- Preference will be given to Canadian citizens.
