Title: Student Archival Assistant
Department: Cultural Resources – Beaton Institute

The Student Archival Assistant will learn to work with community researchers, assist visiting scholars with archival research service and a range of archival projects. The Student Archival Assistant will gain excellent practical research and technical experience in completing a number of tasks including: researching and analysing primary documents, scanning photographs & textual records, and completing data entry into the Beaton Institute’s Digital Archives. The student will enhance and improve their communication and service skills while working with researchers. The student will be fully oriented to the core functions and operations at the archives. A work plan will be developed and reviewed during the orientation session.


  • Basic research experience required (archival research experience ideal)
  • Student with excellent writing ability and organizational skills
  • Student with demonstrated computer skills such as navigating spreadsheets, data entry and word processing
  • Student must be detail-oriented and comfortable completing repetitive tasks
  • Student must have the ability to follow instructions and troubleshoot basic obstacles or feel comfortable asking for assistance


  • Support researchers at the Beaton Institute – provide instruction on archival research and retrieve materials
  • Work with archival staff to complete tasks and assist with on-going projects or reproduction requests such as scanning and data entry
  • Scan content and upload to the Beaton Institute Digital Archives
  • Provide archival description for content placed on the digital archives
  • Re-house and re-shelve archival materials as needed
  • Support Beaton Institute social media program by researching and sourcing content for Facebook and Twitter
  • Assist staff with set-up and clean-up for on-site classes at the archives
