What qualifications do I need to be considered for this opportunity?

Education and Experience:

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in a senior Labour Relations position within a unionized environment · Experience developing, leading and managing a team to meet departmental and individual goals
  • University Degree in Human Resources, Labour Relations or related field


  • A combination of equivalent education, training, and work experience in a relevant position

Additional Qualifications:

  • Extensive Collective Agreement negotiation experience
  • Experience in interpretation of collective agreements and application of labour relations and labour law principles
  • Experience in investigations and disposition of workplace complaints
  • Effective interpersonal, analytical, problem solving, impact and influence skills with the ability to engage others effectively through a confident, collaborative, and persuasive style
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation and regulations and their application in the workplace
  • Awareness of workplace investigation process and experience conducting investigations
  • Knowledge of disability/absenteeism management processes
  • Strong presentation and facilitation skills
  • Detail oriented, well organized and a demonstrated ability to function effectively with a high degree of interdependence and autonomy
  • Demonstrated ability to organize, prioritize, and multi-task
  • Strong research skills
  • Comprehensive written and oral communication skills
  • Proficient use of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Power Point) Asset Qualifications
  • Chartered Professional in Human Resources (CPHR) or progressing towards obtaining CPHR

Marine Atlantic has an immediate opening for a Labour Relations Manager to join our Human Resources team located in North Sydney, NS. Reporting to the Director – Human Resources, the successful candidate will be a key member of the Human Resources leadership team and will oversee all elements of the labour relations function, including, but not limited to labour relations strategy, management-union relationships, negotiations, policy development, workplace investigations, attendance management, grievance administration including arbitrations, and disciplinary actions. Leading and directing a team of three staff, the Labour Relations Manager is tasked with creating a labour relations function that is a source of sound, knowledgeable advice and progressive policies that reflect current trends and best practices. The role contributes and leads the implementation of critical elements of the Human Resources Strategic Plan. Furthermore, this individual will ensure the effective administration of six collective agreements and relevant legislation in a manner that creates a progressive workplace with productive and respectful relations with union representatives.

 Additional Key Areas of Responsibility

  • Responsible for leading the development of collective bargaining priorities and strategy and the renewal of collective agreements. This involves: 1) Directing the research, information gathering and management consultation required to develop a strategic mandate for collective bargaining. 2)Leading the development of proposals for exchange at collective bargaining to support the mandate and business objectives 3)As Chief Negotiator, directing and guiding the organization’s negotiation team at the bargaining table 4) Employing dispute resolution processes available through legislation and sound practice as necessary to resolve conflicts effectively 5) For collective agreement(s) referred to arbitration or renewal, providing strategic input and support to legal counsel to achieve an effective arbitration decision
  • Manage the implementation of any new terms contained in the revised collective agreements
  • Coordinate and manage corrective discipline process, investigations, and workplace complaints
  • Manage the final resolution of grievances through settlement or grievance arbitration
  • Provide support and advice to the Director and VP Human Resources in areas such as policy development, implementation and/or changes and initiatives to support Marine Atlantic’s Human Resources Strategic Plan
  • Ensure the Labour Relations functions are carried out effectively, efficiently and consistently by providing guidance, support, direction and performance coaching to the Labour Relations team
  • Develop and promote positive working relationships with managers, union representatives and employees
  • Provide coaching, support, advisory services, education and training to managers, supervisors, and employees on matters relating to collective agreement interpretation and administration
  • Work in collaboration with the Occupational Health and Wellness, managers, and employees within the disability management program to promote and implement accommodation for early return to work for occupational and non-occupational cases
  • Work in collaboration with the Occupational Health and managers within the attendance management program
  • Remain current on labour relations trends, best practices, and evolving legislation and regulation and incorporate into Marine Atlantic’s operations as appropriate
  • Prepare and monitor the division’s budget and expenditures plus work within the compliance of the organization’s procurement policy
  • Ensure risk management processes within the function adhere to Marine Atlantic’s Enterprise Risk Management policy
  • Develop and produce reports as required
  • Ensure timely and thorough documentation of labour relations activities and decisions
  • Assist with the effective operation of various Labour Management committees
  • Promote a safe working environment
