Position Scope

This is one of the two new positions, reporting to Comhairle na Gàidhlig (NS Gaelic Council). The position will be responsible for developing and implementing a social media campaign for Comhairle na Gàidhlig (Nova Scotia Gaelic Council).  Working with the Website Developer, s/he will work to integrate various social media platforms into an updated version of the current website for the Gaelic Council (www.gaelic.ca).  S/he will be responsible for compiling a file of success stories and photographs documenting Gaelic activities, entering stories into a province-wide electronic information management system, NovaStory, when appropriate. S/he will work with Gaelic Council members and other partners to research, recommend, develop and, at times, execute appropriate community building activities.

This position will be hosted at the C@P site in either Port Hood or Antigonish, depending on the successful candidates location and space availability. Day-to-day supervision will be the responsibility of the host C@P location. Overall direction and regular reporting will be the responsibility of the Executive of Comhairle na Gàidhlig.

The Social Media/ Community Outreach Coordinator, will be focused on communications-based tasks, such as the development and maintenance of various social media tools (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.) and the integration of these tools into the Gaelic Council website. Secondly, the position will liaise with Executive members of Comhairle na Gàidhlig (the Nova Scotia Gaelic Council), as well as staff at provincial Office of Gaelic Affairs, to research good practice examples of activities which may support increased capacity at the community level for Gaels in Nova Scotia. With the support of the employer, the position may go on to further develop and implement activities, as appropriate.


  • Some community college or university education is necessary, preferably in Public Relations
  • Must have some post-secondary education
  • Ability to work independently with little supervision
  • Be comfortable communicating clearly in on-line meetings
  • Ability to meet deadlines
  • Good knowledge of Social Media Platforms
  • Strong writing, editing and general communication skills
  • Working knowledge of Gaelic language, history and culture would be an asset



Duties and Responsibilities

  • Create and maintain various social media accounts for the Gaelic Council
  • Prepare and deliver publicity and promotional products to a broad range of community members
  • Deal effectively with the public and partners
  • Encourage local media to publicize Gaelic activities and events
  • Write success stories
  • Assist in the organization of events and programs initiating and planning local PR campaign
  • Writing and editing press releases and articles, if needed
  • Working closely with the Executive, researching, submitting and updating information for the website
  • If required, preparing and supervising the production of publicity brochures, handouts, and photographs, and multimedia programs
  • Organizing special events, such as press conferences, exhibitions, open days, tours, competitions and sponsorship
  • Fostering community relations through events such as open days and through involvement in community initiatives
  • Participate in weekly on-line meeting with Executive
  • Other duties as required

Technical program requirements:

– Between the age of 15 to 30;

– A Canadian citizen, or a permanent resident and legally entitled to work in Canada;

– Not in receipt of EI

– A student currently enrolled in a post-secondary institution; such as, colleges, universities, schools of technology, or

– A youth who has completed at least 1 course at a university or other post-secondary institution.


Start date: January 12, 2016 – April 1, 2016

Pay rate: $15.00/hr  35hrs/wk
