ALL CBU/CO-OP STUDENTS – Lead Wilderness Counsellor, Tim Horton Children’s Foundation – Tatamagouche

Requirements

You thrive in the wilderness. Your experience with wilderness tripping has given you skills that
allow you to lead multi-day experiences. You know how to support and encourage participants
as they work through the physical and emotional challenges that can occur on trips.

Children’s Foundation.

Qualifications 

You are …

  • pursuing post-secondary education in recreation, outdoor/adventure education, teaching or related field
  • experienced at working with youth aged 12 – 16
  • experienced at planning and leading wilderness backpacking trips
  • strong at group facilitation and successfully adapt facilitation style based on individual or group needs
  • skilled in positive behaviour management
  • equipped with good judgment and decision-making skills; you know when to bring in key team members as it
    relates to escalated concerns
  • fit to participate in multi-day wilderness backpacking trips, and maintain energy and focus to support campers in
    physical and emotional obstacles
  • certified in Wilderness First Aid (WFA) or Wilderness First Responder (WFR), or are willing to obtain
  • bilingual in English and French (considered an asset)
  • able to provide an acceptable criminal background check
  • able to join us between June 2, 2018 and August 31, 2018

Responsibilities

Responsibilities 

You will …

  • establish relationships with youth that reflect respect, trust and empathy
  • support the successful execution of multi-day wilderness trip experiences, connecting them back to the THCF
    Youth Leadership Program Framework
  • encourage camper development through their own processing and readiness, and recognize their achievements
  • use respectful, positive behaviour management techniques
  • model healthy choices and emotional maturity
  • identify, assess and appropriately manage risks and off-site crises in line with THCF risk management standards
  • provide mentorship, knowledge and skill transfer to other staff
  • be challenged physically and mentally as you live in an overnight camp and wilderness setting for 10 day sessions,
    with 2 days of break in between
  • learn that the challenge is also rewarding, and will experience personal growth alongside the campers you are
    supporting
