Imhotep’s Legacy Academy is a university-community initiative that seeks to improve the academic performance of African-Canadians in STEM subjects and the representation of African Canadians in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) professions by providing opportunities for young learners to engage in activities that strengthen their science and math aptitude.
- Proficiency in video creation and editing
- Strong instructional writing and oral communication
- STEM research background
- Completed at least one year of post-secondary education in Nova Scotia.
- Aptitude in at least two STEM subjects/field of study: Biology, Chemistry, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Health Sciences, Medical Sciences, etc.
- Strong research skills.
- Experience in videography and video editing is required.
- Ability to relay complicated STEM information in simple terms suited to Gr. 6-9 level.
- Self-motivated, independent, able set objectives and meet deadlines.
- Knowledge of ‘African’ STEM inventors/innovators an asset.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Essential Position Functions
Video Production of Science Activities (16 wks)
Recognizing the pedagogical benefits of using videos to enhance learning, ILA has begun the creation and cataloguing of science activity videos to complement its full suite of science activities (gr. 6 – 9). The videographer will produce videos of each science activity: creating a consistent look and feel for all videos, maintaining quality standards, ensuring the science concepts are accurately relayed, and editing the videos. In addition to presenting the activities before the camera, the videographer will also be responsible for directing African Nova Scotian student-volunteers in the presentation of select science activities. Activity videos will be vetted by ILA program participants to ensure suitable pacing, format, and clarity.
As they are completed, the science activity videos will be posted on the Imhotep’s Legacy Academy YouTube channel: http://bit.ly/ILA-YouTube, making them accessible to all interested junior high school students regardless of geographic location. Thus, with geographic boundaries eliminated there is the potential to attract a whole new audience to science. African Nova Scotian students will be able to see themselves—through others that look like they do—conducting science experiments. As well, ILA Mentors will be able to use the videos as guides on the
proper delivery of ILA’s science experiments.
- Review of existing science activities and acquire a thorough understanding of the science concepts presented.
- Ability to verbally communicate math and science experiments and activities in English while in front of a recording camera.
- Test selected experiments and activities with ILA staff and University Mentors.
- Use of video cameras and video-editing software.
- Directing secondary school student-volunteers in the presentation of the science activities Supervision and Mentoring Plans
- The Executive Director will provide overall on-site supervision and direction.
- Student will be provided with a list of duties to be completed by the end of the term. The Program Manager will meet with the student on a weekly basis to gauge progress and to clarify/resolve issues.
Health and Safety Practices in the Workplace
- The student will be advised on the location of all safety equipment available on-site, i.e., googles, gloves, ANSI Standard First Aid Kit, etc.
- Dalhousie University has an Environmental Health and Safety Office on campus.
Preference will be given to applicants who have demonstrated interest and experience in issues affecting the education of learners of African Nova Scotian descent.
Please note, to be eligible for this position students must:
- be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment;
- have been registered as full-time students in the previous academic year and intend to return to school on a full-time basis in the next academic year;
- be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act; and,
- be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations.

Period of employment
This is an expected Mon-Fri position with a one hour (unpaid) lunch break. The selected worker must be able to accommodate flexible working hours as there may be work requirements outside regular business hours.
The work schedule will be adjusted accordingly to accommodate this requirement as no overtime is available for this position.
