The main objective of the job is to create exciting, stimulating, hands-on/minds-on science education experiences for visitors in both official languages. Additional objectives include providing better service to francophone visitors, and a generally increased use of French in the Centre. Students will benefit from the opportunity of working in a challenging and dynamic front-line setting, providing significant opportunity to improve upon their communication skills, organizational skills, knowledge of science, knowledge of educational practices, and customer-service skills. Discovery Centre and the local community will benefit from an increased presence of French services in the science centre, making the centre’s content more accessible to resident and visiting francophones, as well as encouraging the use of French by English speaking staff and visitors.
One or a combination of education, science, museum studies or a related field at a university level. Experience in a museum, science centre or recreational setting an asset. Experience in a front-line setting dealing with the public required. Bilingualism in English and French (spoken) is required. Background – Relevant program at the university level
Description of Tasks:
The STEAM Facilitator works in the Science Education department under the supervision of the Manager of Science Experience and Innovation. The primary tasks are:
- to facilitate the visitor’s experience
- to present live science shows and demonstrations
- to create an atmosphere of fun and enjoyment around the topic of science
- to maintain a safe and clean environment for visitors
- to work within a team-oriented environment, collaborating on new initiatives, developing scheduling plans
Applicants must meet eligibility requirements for the Young Canada Works in Both Official Languages program. Requirements include; must be a full-time student returning to full-time studies in the fall of 2018; must either be a student from Halifax attending a school outside of Halifax, or a student originally from outside of Halifax attending school in Halifax; must be registered on the YCW website.
