Safe Driving Message from the RCMP

To the Cape Breton University community,

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Traffic Services is committed to promoting the safety of our community members on highways across our province, including the student population at Cape Breton University.

With the academic year in full swing, we would like to emphasize the importance of road safety. Whether you’re commuting to campus, heading out with friends or exploring the region, we want to ensure everyone reaches their destination safety.

Recently, our team has seen a dramatic increase in speeding on the Island, particularly on Route 4, which passes through Big Pond.

Posted speed limits exist to help keep everyone using the road – drivers and pedestrians alike –

safe. When you choose to drive faster than the posted speed limit, you’re putting yourself and others at risk. We have a shared responsibility to keep our roadways safe for everyone.

I ask that you keep the following safety tips in mind:

  1. Buckle up: Always wear your seatbelt and encourage passengers to do the same. Seatbelts are a simple yet effective way to protect yourself in the event of a collision.
  2. Obey speed limits: Adhering to posted speed limits is crucial for your safety and the safety of others. Speed limits are set with everyone’s well-being in mind – including community members and pedestrians.
  3. Avoid distractions: Stay focused on the road. Avoid using your phone or engaging in activities that divert your attention while driving. A momentary distraction could have serious consequences.
  4. Designate a sober driver: If you plan to consume alcohol, always designate a sober driver, or use alternative transportation. Driving under the influence is not only illegal, but extremely dangerous.
  5. Winter preparedness: Winter driving conditions require more attention and less speed. We urge you to slow down and ensure your vehicle is winter-ready.

I encourage you to share this message with your friends and fellow students, reminding them of the importance of safe and responsible driving. Remember, your choices on the road affect others.

Thank you for your attention to this important matter, and let’s continue to make Cape Breton Island a safe place for all.

Sincerely,

Cpl. Gary McLaughlin M.O.M
