My name is Patrick Cookson. I’m from Sydney, NS and I am a fourth year business student at CBU. I am currently working with the Marketing and Communications department of CBU as a co-op student. I would be lying if I said this wasn’t one of the best summers I’ve ever had. I’ve learned a lot about the many different aspects of marketing and I have been able to apply what I’ve learned in class to real workplace situations. I’ve had the opportunity to create web articles, film academic events and even star in my own commercial! That being said, I think my favorite part would be coming to work each morning and working with an incredibly talented team of people. The marketing department is like one big happy family and it will be hard to say goodbye to it in the fall.
When I found out I got the job, I felt happy, excited and nervous all at the same time. I was happy because this co-op placement would serve as my introduction to the marketing world. However, I was also nervous because I was worried I wouldn’t be able to keep up with everyone else. I now know that there was no reason for me to be nervous. My classes had prepared me, and even though I didn’t realize it at the time, I was ready for this work term! The work is fun, the staff is incredible and I am actually excited to get up in the morning and drive to CBU.
It’s going to take me a little while to get used to my routine as a student again. I’ll always see a CBU ad or an article on the website and instantly start thinking about my time with the Marketing and Communications department. One thing I’m sure of is that this co-op placement has given me the confidence to study harder and do the best I can in my classes. I want to have excellent marks in order to secure a job like the one I had this summer. My time as a co-op student as shown me that marketing is what I want to do with my life. I strongly encourage any CBU student to reach out to a Student Placement Officer and get involved with the co-op program. It truly is an experience that could change your life.
