Science, Women, Opportunity
On Saturday, March 24, 2018, Island WISE (Women in Science and Engineering) will host the seventh annual Women in Science Retreat at Cape Breton University’s Verschuren Centre for Sustainability in Energy in the Environment. The daylong event aims to show young women the possibilities and excitement related to studying the sciences, allowing them to explore career opportunities early.
“The Natural Science in Engineering Research Council and the CBU initiative of Island WISE is an excellent opportunity for young women in grade 7-12 to participate in fun, hands-on science with easy access to mentors.” says Island WISE team lead and Associate Professor of Organic Chemistry, Dr. Stephanie MacQuarrie.
The one-day retreat will feature inspiring stories of successful women in various science-related careers with engaging activities and lots of prizes.
On the morning of the retreat, registration begins at 10:30 a.m., with events and presentations to follow. A pizza lunch will be provided for all registered attendees. The retreat is free of charge and pre-registration is required. Young women who register before March 20, will be entered for the chance to win a Fujji Instapix at the event.
In addition to the CBU retreat, Island WISE will hold two retreats in First Nation communities. Those events are scheduled for April 21 in We’koqma’q (Waycobah), and June 9 in Potlotek. Please note that while the focus of these events is to encourage young women to explore science options, participants of all genders are welcome with interest.
