For Shania Boucher, Cape Breton University was always a strong contender when it came time to choose a path after high school. Being from River Bourgeois, studying close to home was appealing to Shania, but a campus tour is what ultimately secured her decision to study in the Bachelor of Business Administration program at CBU.
“My campus tour definitely won me over. The business school was beautiful, the class sizes were small, and the campus in general felt welcoming,” says Shania. “When I realized how great the scholarship and bursary opportunities were, I was completely decided.”
Since starting her CBU journey three years ago, Shania has become very involved in a number of societies and activities on campus, grasping every opportunity that comes her way. “This year I am a Peer Success Coach, a member of the House Council and the Business Society, and I sit on the Student Representative Council of the Students’ Union as the Residence Representative,” says Shania. “I’ve also had the chance to help out with lots of great events on campus as a Frosh Leader and as a volunteer.”
In addition to all of her involvement on campus, Shania is also completing a co-op work-term with the Nova Scotia Health Authority, working in the finance department of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. She largely attributes these unique and vast opportunities to CBU’s small and close-knit community.
“I can’t preach enough about the benefits of a small university,” says Shania. “I’ve had the chance to form great relationships with many of my professors, leading to great opportunities. I strongly believe that these types of opportunities don’t come as readily at larger universities, and I think these are the things that may help set me apart in the industry when I graduate.”
Outside of the classroom, Shania has also made life-long friendships and connections, many of which were developed while living in residence. “I’ve stayed on campus every year that I’ve been here, and wouldn’t change it for the world,” says Shania. “I’ve met most of my now-closest friends through living on residence, and there are always tons of activities to get involved with.”
