CBU Nursing students involved in the CBU International Nursing Experience have been working hard to fundraise for their upcoming trip to South America. On February 20, 2017, four faculty members and 25 students will head to Quito, Ecuador, where they will provide care in hospitals, clinics, communities, and child care organizations.
One of the group’s main fundraising efforts is the Black Tie Gala. The inaugural Gala was held in December 2015, and saw approximately 350 event attendees as well as roughly $8000 raised.
“This year we are upgrading the venue from downstairs at the Membertou Trade and Convention Centre to the room upstairs to better accommodate a larger amount of people, so we’re hoping to see that number increase!” says the group’s representatives, Morgan McGillivray (President), Brialee Tighe (Vice President) and Brea Falconer (Secretary).
The funds raised from the Black Tie Gala, and other initiatives put forth by the group, are to be used toward travel costs and supplies necessary for the trip. “We are gathering a range of items including medical and dental supplies, clothing, food, toys for children, and necessities for the elderly,” says the group. “In order to come up with some of this money, we’ve been planning monthly fundraisers and requesting donations from local business and community leaders.”
This year’s Black Tie Gala will take place on Thursday, December 22 from 10:00 p.m. -2:00 a.m. at the Membertou Trade & Convention Centre’s Great Hall. Guests are asked to dress in semi formal attire, and can expect an evening of music and dancing, along with a photobooth and candy bar.
For those wishing to purchase tickets, the group will be set up in the CBU cafeteria on Wednesday, November 30, from 11:00 a.m. -1:00 p.m. Tickets can also be purchased in the Nursing Department from Lee Singleton, or from Pharmasave on Charlotte Street.
