Keigan Kolanko always saw himself as a selfless, caring and motivated person, with a passion for helping others. Growing up in Sydney, he decided Nursing at CBU would give him the opportunity to not only chase his passion, but to do so locally. Now in his third year of the Nursing program, Keigan remains happy with his decision to study at CBU. “The Nursing program is majorly supportive and provides the opportunity to really get to know your professors and form a professional relationship that optimizes learning potential,” says Keigan.
One of the things Keigan loves most about CBU’s Nursing program is the comfortable learning environment the professors provide for their students. “Anytime I feel the need to meet with them they are just a quick email away – they want to see all their students succeed.” says Keigan.
Being an upper-year student, Keigan finds he is now starting to bridge theory and practice within his learning. “The hands-on experience at CBU is top notch,” says Keigan. “The students are provided many resources to improve their nursing skills. When we’re not in the Nursing or Simulation Lab, we are working in the hospital or community, being provided with amazing hands-on learning experiences.”
Keigan has already had rewarding work experiences during his position at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital as Student Nurse. “One shift I was caring for a patient and at the end of the day the patient’s daughter came up to me and my instructor to thank me for everything I did,” says Keigan. “It was a really small simple moment, but it meant the world to me that I could make a difference.”
Having a passion for mental health, after graduating from CBU Keigan plans to stay in Nova Scotia and work in a hospital as a Mental Health Nurse, hoping to make a positive impact on his future patients’ lives.
When asked if he had any advice for students considering taking Nursing at CBU, Keigan says, “Go for it! The Nursing program at CBU has amazing professors that help you inside the classroom, and you also get to learn outside of the classroom while working alongside experienced nurses.”
