Entrepreneurs in Action

The Small Business Development Centre (SBDC) at Cape Breton University (CBU) has businesses talking about a video project that will provide entrepreneurs across the Island and beyond with information critical to their businesses success. The SBDC is launching Entrepreneurs in Action, a series of six information videos focused on business skills that will provide small business owners with tools needed to obtain business success. Each video is twenty minutes in length and focuses on the following six topics: marketing, finance, strategy, accounting, operations and human resources.

The first three videos, on marketing, finance and strategy, are complete and can be found on the SBDC website at www.cbu.ca/sbdc. The remaining three videos are in production and will be available in the coming months.

“The Small Business Development Centre recognized the need to provide clients and business owners with information in both accessible and convenient ways,” says Mary Jane Morrison, Director of the Small Business Development Centre. “Online videos meet this need. By developing this video series and housing it on the SBDC website, information can be accessed at any time and from any location convenient to the entrepreneurs. They can review the material multiple times and continue using the material as a reference when needed throughout the course of their business endeavours.”

The SBDC, with input from the business community, began this project in September. It was decided that the best way to inform and educate their clients was to provide them with the knowledge and expertise of CBU business faculty along with the experience and success stories of local business owners. Each video contains content developed by CBU faculty as well as a local business person’s testimonial on the importance of the role that topic plays in running their business successfully.

“The project has been well received,” says Mary Jane Morrison. “Video previews were shown during Small Business Week this past October in both Sydney and Port Hawkesbury and the feedback was very enthusiastic.”

Owners or representatives of Cape Breton businesses Smart Shop Place, Halifax Biomedical, Venture Solutions, Subway, Creative Catering and the Inverary Inn are featured in the videos providing firsthand knowledge of the importance of the topics covered in the videos. Also, CBU faculty members Dr. Keith Brown, Dr. George Karaphillis, Dr. Jacquelyn Scott, and Assistant Professor Derrick Hayes, as well as content experts Mary Beth Doucette and Jeff Young lent their expertise to the project.

The production of these videos was made possible through a financial contribution from ECBC.
