The event, taking place on February 1, will feature student performances, delicious food, interactive cultural displays and a stunning fireworks show. Adam, along with his classmate Brittany, will be the emcees of the event, ringing in the Lunar New Year in style.
“I am thrilled to be part of this event again,” says Adam, who has participated in past celebrations at CBU. “This year we’re making it even more inclusive by changing the name from Chinese New Year to Lunar New Year, so all cultures can be honoured.”
The Lunar New Year festival is celebrated throughout Asia as a fresh start, clearing out the past and inviting good luck for the coming year. It is a time to reunite with family and friends, wishing everyone a year of health and prosperity.
One of the things Adam enjoys most about living in Canada is the welcoming nature of the community. He says this makes him even more excited to share his culture with those who call Cape Breton home.
“Our strength lies in cultural awareness,” says Adam. “This event is a way for CBU to demonstrate to our community and the world, how important this value is.”
Adam says the evening will be a fun and entertaining way for people to gain an understanding of others, bringing us closer together as a community. “The best way to learn about another culture is to celebrate alongside them!” Adam says.
CBU’s Lunar New Year celebration is a free event, open to all members of the community. Tickets are limited, and can be picked up at the International Student and Study Abroad Centre or by contacting Kalie_wang@cbu.ca
