CBU Student Wins Prestigious Frank H. Sobey Award

Fourth-year Cape Breton University Bachelor of Business Administration student, Roy Karam, was recently awarded $25,000 as a recipient of the 2018 Frank H. Sobey Awards for Excellence in Business Studies.

“I am truly honoured to become part of a distinguished alumni composed of like-minded business students across Canada,” says Karam.  “Receiving the Frank Sobey Business award has heightened my appreciation of actively employing an entrepreneurial mindset within my Institution, community and personal life. Cape Breton University has been an incubator of leadership and afforded me the opportunity to participate in academic entrepreneurship and business development every single day.”

 With aspirations of law and politics, Karam is highly involved in his community playing and coaching basketball, is a member of Bay it Forward, a community group focused on the advancement of Glace Bay and works part-time at CBU as Special Projects Coordinator, focused on international partnerships and business development. He is also a former Cape Breton University Students’ Union president, where he developed great leadership skills.

“Roy is an exceptional student and person,” says Dean of the Shannon School of Business, George Karaphillis. “His investment in his community and his studies speaks to the high calibre of student that he is. His dedication and commitment will serve him as well as he develops in his career. We’re all very proud of him at CBU.”

Annually, over 30 finalists are nominated by the Deans of each of the Atlantic Canadian Business Schools. Karam was among this year’s final eight. Since the award’s inception, the final eight recipients have been chosen by a Board of Trustees, comprised of Atlantic Canadian business and academic leaders. The Frank H Sobey Awards are made on criteria including: entrepreneurial experience, university & community leadership, career aspirations, and overall academic achievement.
