CBU Board of Governors Names Next President

The Cape Breton University Board of Governors is excited to announce that David C. Dingwall will be the next President & Vice-Chancellor of Cape Breton University.

This news comes after an exhaustive and comprehensive search process that included broad stakeholder consultation, as well as input from a community group who voluntarily led 21 focus groups in Victoria County, Inverness County, Richmond County and the Cape Breton Regional Municipality. This information, combined with assistance from the national executive search firm, Odgers Berndtson, gave the Committee a full view of what was thought to be needed in the next President of CBU.

“Cape Breton University is a key economic driver and centre for cultural, entrepreneurship, business, and innovation for the only other significantly-sized urban centre outside of the Halifax Regional Municipality,” says Robert Sampson, Chair, CBU Board of Governors. It was essential to find a candidate who understands this and our University’s importance to the future of our great Island.”

Throughout his career, Mr. Dingwall has always considered the University to be Cape Breton Island’s university and firmly believes that CBU must be viewed as a critical asset for our region. Mr. Dingwall also recognizes the contributions that CBU has made on a local and provincial level as a strong contributor to immigration, energy policy, export development, and economic agendas and understands that fundamental research is essential to their success. He knows full well the challenges that CBU faces in a time of demographic decline and financial constraints and the need to be innovative and fiscally responsible.

“Cape Breton University is one of the most important institutions on our Island. Over the years, I have seen the tremendous impact our University has had on our region and I’m committed to working with stakeholders to advance CBU and Cape Breton Island. I am eager to get to know our campus community and begin the important work that lies ahead,” says Mr. Dingwall.

Approximately 20 high quality applications were received as a result of this process. Mr. Dingwall demonstrated the qualities and experience that the Presidential Search Committee was looking for and that public engagement deemed as important.

With his community ties and extensive global private and public sector experience, he has the passion and leadership to propel Cape Breton Island, its communities and our University.
