Cape Breton University and the Shannon School of Business would like to congratulate Derrick Hayes, associate professor of accounting and department chair of financial & information management on winning the 2013 Ross L. Towler CA of the Year Award from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nova Scotia (ICANS).
Derrick received both his Bachelor of Business Administration degree and Master of Business Administration (Community Economic Development) degree from Cape Breton University, his Chartered Accountant (CA) designation from the Institute of Charted Accountants of Nova Scotia (ICANS) and his Certified Management Accountant (CMA) designation from the Society of Management Accountants of Nova Scotia. Derrick's primary area of research is in community economic development and not-for-profit activities in Cape Breton.
Derrick holds over 18 years of service at CBU and in addition to providing quality education to his students, he has been a member of numerous boards and committees within the University such as the CBU Research Ethics Board, AUS championship committees for women’s basketball, women’s volleyball, and men’s soccer, and is also the past president of the CBU Alumni Association. He also generously volunteered his time with numerous community organizations such as the Sydney Ports Corporation, the Savoy Theatre and the Glace Bay Minor Hockey Association. He also holds a seat on the governing council for ICANS, and is past chair of the Atlantic School of Chartered Accountancy.
A great sports enthusiast, Derrick was the chair of the 2013 Canadian Little League Championships, served as past coach coordinator for Glace Bay Minor Hockey Association, and currently coaches in local hockey, soccer and baseball minor systems.
The Ross L. Towler CA of the Year Award was named after Ross L. Towler, FCA, upon his retirement in 1997, after 28 years of service as ICANS Executive Director. This coveted award is presented annually to a CA who embodies the spirit of community volunteerism.
