The Cape Breton University Athletics Department will honour two local sport ambassadors when they host the 2017 Subway Atlantic University Sport (AUS) Men’s Soccer Championship from November 2-5, 2017 at the CBU field.

Both Brian Fraser and Kirk Macrae will serve as Honorary Chair’s of the tournament, acknowledging and celebrating their years of community service and dedication to sport in Cape Breton.

“We are absolutely thrilled to be able to honour Brian and Kirk this year,” says John Ryan, Director of Athletics, Cape Breton University. “They have given so selflessly over the years and have provided mentorship and opportunity to youth, empowering them to succeed at sport and in life. It’s a great honour for us to be able to recognize them in this manner.”

Brian Fraser fell in love with the beautiful game of soccer in the late 60’s watching the Broadway Ramblers play. He began to play himself with a club in the 70’s and started coaching in the 80’s.

Brian continued to coach after his children were born with the Whitney Pier Soccer Club. He coached boys teams in his early years, having success and enjoying teaching the skills needed to master the game. In 2009 Brian began coaching Girl’s soccer after two battles with cancer. He learned so much more about coaching, and life, from the girls!

Brian’s coaching journey earned him and his teams multiple Provincial Championship titles including this past summer when he coached the Whitney Pier U-17 Girl’s team to victory.
When he wasn’t coaching, Brian ran skills sessions for younger children, having his girls teams help to gain experience. Brian credits much to the young women he’s worked with over the years, noting that he could not have succeeded without their help.

“I am truly thankful for all my coaching experiences over the years,” says Brian. “I have met many wonderful people and made great friends. It is so special to be asked to be Honorary Chair for the AUS Championship. My love for this game will never end, even if my years as a coach are finished.”

Kirk MacRae is a long-time sports enthusiast and avid supporter of Cape Breton University Athletics. A dear friend to Cape Breton University, Kirk has been a proud local sponsor of sport for more than 25 years.

As the previous owner of Subway, Kirk always welcomed the chance to get involved in tournaments and encourage youth to be healthy and active.

Currently, Kirk is President of RKM Investments Ltd which has interests in food, real estate and construction industries. He has served his community in leadership roles with the United Way Cape Breton, Celtic Colours International Festival and the Gaelic College, just to name a few.

“It is a real honour to be involved with Atlantic University Sports and Cape Breton University Athletics in hosting the 2017 AUS Men’s Soccer Championship,” says Kirk. “The level of play should provide us with an exciting weekend of competition as CBU defends its Championship. I hope to see many community members come out to support CBU and cheer on the teams in such a quality tournament.”

Both the Men’s and Women’s CAPERS soccer teams have clinched first place and first round byes in the playoffs. CBU is the only University in the country with two soccer teams currently ranked in the top four. The Men’s team is the only undefeated men’s team in the country.

The 2017 Subway AUS Men’s Soccer Championship action kicks off on Thursday at 4:00 p.m. Visit for full schedule.
