CAPERS Athletics to Host 2011 AUS Volleyball Championship

Cape Breton University Department of Athletics announced today that they will host the Subway 2011 AUS Women’s Volleyball Championship, February 18-20 at the Sullivan Fieldhouse. This will mark the first time the event has been staged in Cape Breton since 2003 and continues the University’s history of hosting first-class championship events.

“We are pleased to be able to host this event at CBU and to showcase the best university volleyball teams in Atlantic Canada,” said John Ryan, CBU’s Director of Athletics. “With the success of the AUS men’s and women’s basketball championships here last year, Cape Bretoners have been exposed to some of the highest calibre of athletic competition in the country. We hope fans join us in supporting the hometown CAPERS and take advantage of this opportunity to once again see some of best young student-athletes”

One of the most consistent teams in the AUS, qualifying for the playoffs in eight of the past nine seasons, the CAPERS women’s volleyball team continues to build to the AUS championship.
“This is a great opportunity for us to showcase our team and university,” said Claude Lapre, Head Coach, CAPERS Women’s Volleyball team. “We have been building towards this event and look forward to playing for the title in front of our home fans.”

Leading the CAPERS will be Kristen Ryan, of Port Hastings, N.S., the first CAPER to capture an AUS major award when she was named Libero of the Year last season, continues to be a leader for CBU and leads the league in digs, averaging 4.17 per game.

Megan Brown, of North Sydney, N.S., who was a member of the AUS All-Rookie team two seasons ago has developed into one the CAPERS most consistent players, averaging 2.38 kills per game (ninth in the AUS), 3.30 points per game (sixth in the AUS) and 1 block per game (fourth in the AUS).

“An event like this not only continues the proud tradition of CAPERS Athletics but also generates an economic impact by attracting a significant number of people to our region,” says Gordon MacInnis, Vice-President, Finance and Operations. “This community, and our campus, prides itself as an excellent host venue for AUS Championship events for both participants and spectators. We are proud of our team and extend our continued support to the CAPERS Women’s Volleyball team. We look forward to welcoming the AUS women’s volleyball community to Cape Breton”

Robert Young and Sheila Kennedy have been selected as Honorary Chairs of the Championship. Both have multiple years of experience playing and coaching volleyball at many levels and have been instrumental in developing volleyball programs for youth in the area.
